Meditating to a power tool symphony

Tropical Vampire opened the evening with her hypnotic vocals and experimental drone.

Remember the last time your neighbour’s drilling woke you up on a hungover Sunday morning? Or how about the time the pile driver from the road works irritated you so much you could stab yourself in the thigh just to stop it? Now add some synths, throw in some droning bass, blend them all up in distortions and (insert what it is that musicians do). And here you have it.

KLÖBB – Malmø, Sweden’s only club evening dedicated to Noise. There’re no laser lights, no bouncers, no tight dresses. Only a surprisingly soothing symphony of noises expertly delivered through shrieking and metal polishing, with a scent of charred steel lingering in the disturbed air.

I know many music hipsters that take pride in liking something that no one else would really like. And I’m pretty sure some of the more vocal fans of Noise think that they’re so fucking cool because they’re into a genre of music that even the hardest techno head wouldn’t understand.  They wear exclusively black and try their best not to smile. But Noise is for everyone, including your mama. Allow me to explain.

Kürr's industrial madness drove my consciousness into a state of ecstasy.

Everyone likes massages

Well, for those who haven’t experienced a full-on Noise performance, Noise is pretty fucking irritating to listen to on Soundcloud. It’s not something you could sing along to, nor has it got a catchy beat that you could dance to. It’s really is, just noise.

Nicklas Lundberg squeezed our minds into his rabbit hole of twisted acid toy piano tunes.

But when you find yourself in a Noise arena, it’s a multi-sensory immersion of your existence in sound. You hear the sound being produced, at that volume, you also feel the air, the ground, your body, vibrating to those sound waves. At just the right frequencies, it’s not difficult to imagine how the individual particles in your body can be affected by those waves, and start vibrating according to the music as well. Well, according to String Theory, deep inside every one of our particles is merely a string of vibrating energy. So letting yourself go at KLÖBB is really like getting a deep tissue / particle massage with sound waves. Invite your mama.

And it’s feels even better than a massage, because every part of your body (including the fun bits) is being caressed at the same time.

It’s a guided meditation without pretentious hippies

Hippies always talk about the primordial “Aum “ as the sound of creation, the sacred vibration of the universe’s existence. Well, at KLÖBB, the “Aum “ is constantly infiltrating your consciousness. It’s so loud, it’s so noisy, that when you allow yourself to finally accept that you’re there, Noise drowns out all other thoughts and sets you in a state of meditation, it forces you to be in the now.

But really, KLÖBB isn’t just noise. The artistes’ ambient sounds, techno beats, and psychedelic visions also thrust you into a world suspended in midair, cushioned by vibrations, and soothed by the calming strokes of gentle waves. Plus, feel the audio prowess of homemade instruments, toys, piano strings, and saws.

Nima Ikki's techno flows topped the evening off like a sticky cherry on a bass cupcake.

In short, KLÖBB is letting you make love with sound. Come participate in the orgy of your senses with us the next time. Follow them here to get the next invitation.
